From Fort Worth we headed west and south toward a remote part of Texas where the small town of Marfa boasts a major museum of contemporary art, the Chinati Foundation. The first day we drove all the way to Pecos without stopping for pictures. The second day we stopped to stretch our legs at Fort Davis, an Indian-fighting fort that was named for Jefferson Davis, when he was still a highly regarded general in the Union Army. Later he became President of the Confederacy.

After checking into El Paisano, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and the best hotel in Marfa, we ventured down to Presidio, a town on the border with Mexico, stopping only for a few pictures of the abandoned silver-mining town of Shafter.
