The collections of The Hermitage State Museum are housed in four adjacent buildings that were integrated together over a span of 100 years: the Winter Palace (1754-62), the Small Hermitage (1764-1775), the Large (or Old) Hermitage (1787) and the New Hermitage (1852). The interior decorations and furnishings of many galleries and palace rooms are masterpieces in themselves. We frequently got lost in this maze, but it was worth it! We spent three full days at the Hermitage and only saw 60% of their amazing collection. I photographed their paintings as best I could, but conditions were difficult. Crowded galleries and much glare on many paintings defeated my best efforts.
